Damilola is 1 of 4 children. Her parents can not afford to pay school fees for any of their children. The oldest sister lives with someone outside the town who pays her school fees. The younger sister's school fees are paid by a concerned neighbour. The the last child does not go to school at all.

Damilola's father repairs tires by the road side and her mum sells palm kernel oil. The mother sells in the morning and helps the husband mend tires for the remainder of the day. The mother would like to sell food items by the road side but didn't have the funds to sustain a business. Damilola previously attended a public primary school, but the education was very poor and causing her to fall far behind grade level.
